The first time Chu Tingyan saw Wei Xiting, she was sitting on her father's lap. The young man knelt before them, offering himself as a hostage in exchange for Chu sending troops to relieve Wei, which was under siege.
She saw the bloodstains on his shoes and socks, and the face as clear and handsome as jade.
Before long, everyone knew that the hostage from Wei had won the heart of the eldest princess. She protected him from humiliation in the Chu palace for five years, secured Chu's protection for him, and won peace for Wei... After all her efforts, the only thing she asked of him in the end was that he marry her.
She left her home and married far away for his sake. She endured the restrictions of the Wei palace, his beloved concubines, and bore him children... Yet in the end, he would not even accept the child she had given him.
She knew his heart belonged to someone else, but her child was innocent.
The princess married far away and was gone for five years. When she returned, she was covered in wounds, bedridden and critically ill, and nearly died.
The King of Chu loved his sister and swore to send troops against Wei. Jiang Tingyan laid a hand on her flat belly and shook her head. "Brother, all I want is never to have anything to do with him again in this life."
Chu Tingyan, eldest princess of Chu, had long been famed for her beauty, which could captivate the world. On the day she was to choose a husband, heirs to thrones from every kingdom flocked to seek her hand.
A Wei envoy hurried in. "The King of Wei has long suffered from a heart ailment and coughed up blood. He may not have much time left. He only wishes to see the princess once more."
Chu Tingyan scoffed, her voice edged with mockery. "Whether he's dead or alive, man or ghost, what does that have to do with me? If he wants to see me so badly, he can come himself."
And so the King of Wei, who had conquered the lands of five kingdoms and struck fear into all who heard his name, climbed onto a swift horse while gravely ill and rode north alone to seek her.
When he finally reached her, he looked just as he had before: pitiful and bedraggled, with bloodstains trailing from his shoes and socks. He collapsed to his knees before her, barely alive.
It was as if the past had returned, yet everything had changed.
"Wei Xiting, what face do you have left to show me? If you truly think you wronged me, then hurry up and die."
A long sword was thrown down before Wei Xiting. She raised her chin haughtily. "Go on, hurry. It's late, and my consort is waiting for me in the tent."
