Let me say the important thing one more time: This novel will go VIP on the 9th, which is Saturday~

Thank you for your support.

Three years after ascending the throne, the new emperor had worked diligently to govern the country. Apart from her sharp tongue, there was truly nothing to fault her for.

Yet no one in court could have imagined that this seemingly faultless emperor would leave behind an imperial edict and quit her job.

While the court officials trembled with anxiety, Her Majesty the Empress was already enjoying tea on a lake cruise.

Disguised as a man, the empress had hoped for a romantic encounter like the ones in storybooks, only to discover that storybooks were all lies.

Still, she did happen to meet a Miao girl who nearly drowned.

Surely this should have been the start of a beautiful romance, right?

But when the girl clutched her chest and said, "That was so, so scary! I almost drowned!"

The emperor replied, "It's fine. You didn't drown."

The Miao girl said, "You're not the one who saved me!"

The emperor said, "How could I, a young master, do such menial work?"

After much difficulty, the emperor took pity on the homeless Miao girl and brought her back.

When the Miao girl saw Her Majesty in women's clothes again, she asked, "Are you Madam Rong?"

The emperor replied, "Yes, I am!"

The imperial bodyguard said, "Your Majesty, this really isn't the storybook's fault. The storybook didn't lie. It's you who's the problem."

Fortunately, the Miao girl was kindhearted and beautiful, and decided to save the emperor, who had been poisoned by a Gu.

As they spent day and night together, Her Majesty suddenly found the girl quite adorable.

So she made what was more or less a confession.

The Miao girl: "No! I can't put a green hat on Rong Shi!"

Her Majesty: "Actually, I'm the current emperor."

The Miao girl: "No! Mother said I can't be a concubine. Not even the emperor's concubine!"

Her Majesty: "My heart aches. My empress is always afraid she'll cheat on me."

The imperial bodyguard: "Miss, Her Majesty told me to tell you that she is Rong Shi."

The Miao girl: "Rong Shi, you melon-brained fool! Mother was right. You can't trust people from the Central Plains. Snake, bite her!"

Her Majesty: "Let's talk this out. Don't release the snake. I was wrong!"

An alternate-universe setting where same-sex marriage is legal. Very sweet.

Theme: Beauty isn't the only reason to praise or grow close to someone. An interesting soul and a fundamentally kind heart matter most.
