The Sun and Moon Shine Brightly (working title)
After the Lin family falls from grace overnight, eight-year-old Lin Huaijin has no choice but to live under someone else's roof, dependent on their goodwill.
He knows his own place, so he grits his teeth and endures every insult and hardship.
But deep down, he does harbor resentment.
So he is always cold and distant toward Gu Mingzhao, even though she has been his betrothed since they were children.
So what if the Gu family is powerful? Even in temporary disgrace, Lin Huaijin still has his pride.
He watches coldly as Gu Mingzhao foolishly offers him her whole heart, unmoved. He calmly accepts her devotion as she follows him day after day, caring for him, seeing to his meals and clothing, and tending to every little thing.
He knows Gu Mingzhao loves him, so he accepts all her kindness without a second thought.
He will marry her someday, after all. He, Lin Huaijin, is a man of his word, and he will give her the position of his principal wife.
For now, though, studying, taking the examinations, finding his family, and making something of himself all come before her.
Besides, she never needs coaxing. Even if he speaks harshly to her, she'll still come over the next day and sweetly call him Brother Huaijin.
He doesn't notice the light in Gu Mingzhao's eyes growing dimmer and dimmer.
Until one day, she looks at the betrothal jade pendant shattered into pieces on the ground, her eyes utterly indifferent.
This time, Lin Huaijin waits a long while, but Gu Mingzhao never again calls out "Brother Huaijin" to him with shining eyes.
Unable to bear it any longer, he follows her from afar, only to see her run straight into another man's arms. That's when Lin Huaijin learns what heartbreak and regret feel like.
The newly repaired jade pendant makes a crisp cracking sound in his hand. When a pair of piercing eyes fixes him with a cold stare, Lin Huaijin suddenly comes to his senses, shivering all over.
The Regent, who has controlled the court for years and stained his hands with countless lives, is glaring at him menacingly.
"Lord Lin." The Regent casually looks away and gives a light cough. "Leave. I am about to take my medicine."
Cold sweat soaks Lin Huaijin's back, but he forces himself to speak. "Mingzhao is drunk. I will take her home."
The pale, sharp-featured Regent gives a derisive laugh and tightens his arms around the young woman. "She is my medicine."
[In this story, even the ashes of the man who got dumped are scattered to the winds.]
[To reiterate, this is a story about someone desperately trying to buy regret medicine, but finding none for sale. The heroine has someone else who loves her.]
[The setting is fictional, so fictional it's in outer space. Everything is whatever the author says it is, so please don't nitpick.]
