The first time Le Yan felt embarrassed in her life was during the summer break of her sophomore year of high school, when she fell flat on her face right in the middle of a dimly lit roller rink.
The moment she struggled to her feet, her hand fell into a stranger's warm palm. Someone leaned close and chuckled by her ear, asking if she was hurt. His tone was languid and carefree.
Le Yan looked up and tried to pull her hand back. The boy's roguish smile faded, and a trace of confusion crept into his eyes. "Sorry, I mistook you for someone else."
He abruptly let go. Le Yan lost her balance, stumbled, and was caught around the waist again.
The lights were too dim that night, and the teasing and catcalls all around them went on without end. Amid the noisy music, the boy seemed to have been needled into exasperation. His flippant words rang especially clearly in her ears from halfway across the aisle: "If one hug means I'm responsible, how am I supposed to take responsibility for everyone?"
"He was once the long-awaited tomorrow in my ordinary life, only to become a dream that ended without warning."
A slow-burn, unrequited love, from campus to city life
P.S. The last line comes from the song You Were Once the Long-Awaited Tomorrow in My Ordinary Life
