Lin Xu pointed with her chubby little finger at the poem she had just learned. "Look, this line says 'There are fine fish in the south,' which means the fish in the south are beautiful."
"And look, the princess on TV is a mermaid too. Are you a mermaid princess?"
The first time he heard this, Nan Jiayu swallowed his annoyance. He was a boy. How could she call him a mermaid, especially when she was that snot-nosed girl next door...
But he couldn't just say that. He was the older brother, after all. Besides, if she burst into tears again, his family would say he was picking on her.
Nan Jiayu had no choice but to shoot her a cold look as she stared at the mermaid on TV and drooled, then walk away in disgust.
But before long, the little girl came over again with a cheerful smile.
It was only later that Nan Jiayu stopped hearing her soft, sweet voice calling him a mermaid.
After that, whenever he saw the word "mermaid," he would suddenly freeze for a moment. Then a voice from the depths of his memory would surface, sounding as though it came from another lifetime: "Are you a mermaid?"
