When Qin Shi Huang burned books and buried scholars alive, the victims were not Confucian scholars, but sorcerers.
Sorcerers across the land were divided into three groups, each in charge of one of the secrets of the stars and moon, the mountains and rivers, or immortality. Of them, the Yanshi, who held the secret of immortality, were the most mysterious. Xu Fu, a Yanshi of the Qin Dynasty, set out to find an immortal beast for Qin Shi Huang. He encountered the most terrifying thing in the world at sea, and never returned. In a single night, the sorcerers were massacred. Only one group was secretly sent into the mountains and escaped their fate.
Zhu Sheng is the last Yanshi in the world. Orphaned at the age of eight, she was adopted by sorcerers and began a completely new life. Though she searches for the so-called immortal beast on behalf of the sorcerers, she has never believed in immortality. She believes only that death is the force connecting this world, until she meets Chen Zheng.
Chen Zheng is a police officer, brimming with righteousness. Though he should have been a materialist, being kidnapped as a child set him on a path to collecting strange tales from around the world. A telecommunications fraud case brings him to Daluo, Yunnan, where he encounters the mystery that will define his life.
