At the very end of her life, Tong Jia Wanyu finally got her wish: to become his wife. Wanyu closed her eyes with a smile. This must have been the hope she'd held all her life: to become her cousin's wife.
For love, Wanyu gave up her freedom and rode in a small sedan chair into the Forbidden City, becoming one of her cousin's many concubines. From the day she entered the palace until the end of her life, she never wore red.
Wanyu naively believed her cousin loved her. As long as he loved her, she could accept anything else, even other people's slander and losing her child, as long as he remained the cousin she knew and still loved her.
Later, Wanyu realized that her cousin did love her, but he also loved other women. Once she understood, all Wanyu wanted was to raise her daughter, so she would have some company in the deep palace. Even that was too much to ask.
