"The threat of civilizational collapse is always there. It takes people continually paying the price to keep civilization going."
When the pitch-black barrel of a gun pressed against the back of Cen Wen's head, he remembered what Lei Lin had once told him.
That night, the sky was dark.
As Lei Lin spoke, he propped himself up on one arm, holding an unlit cigarette between his thumb and forefinger.
He leaned over and brought the cigarette to Cen Wen's lips, wearing a smile that was only half familiar.
Cen Wen lowered his eyes and silently followed his movement, biting down on the end of the cigarette.
Lei Lin lit it for him.
Cen Wen asked, "Why are you taking this so seriously?"
Lei Lin smiled. "It's only right to be serious when speaking to my superior."
The way he addressed him made Cen Wen's expression turn cold as frosted glass.
He shot Lei Lin a sidelong glance, threw off the covers, picked up his clothes from the floor, and left.
On his way out, Cen Wen stubbed out the rest of the cigarette on the shoe cabinet by the door.
A blackened circle remained on the cabinet.
Lei Lin's smile deepened. He called after Cen Wen, "Come by again sometime."
Now.
The sound of a gun's safety being released rang out in the silence.
Cen Wen recognized the person behind him by their familiar scent.
It was the person who had shielded his back from bullets countless times, and who had held him tightly from behind just as often.
Only now, that person was pointing a gun at him.
"Superior, you've lost."
Cen Wen wanted to drown in that voice.
But he knew that beneath the deep sea lay a prison that could suffocate him.
