In the seventh year of her marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Yu Shuyao lost her memory.
In the past, Yu Shuyao and the Crown Prince, Su Huaijin, had been the most bitter enemies in the capital. Su Huaijin had schemed against her behind her back more times than she could count, and Yu Shuyao was no less ruthless, even tearing up his essays right in front of him.
He mocked her for lacking the manners of a proper young lady, so she laughed at him for being a sanctimonious hypocrite. After more than a decade of fighting, Yu Shuyao thought they were destined to battle until one of them died.
Who could have guessed that she would wake up seven years later? Su Huaijin had ascended the throne, and Yu Shuyao had become his empress.
Everyone in the palace knelt respectfully and called her Your Majesty, but their eyes were full of schadenfreude. After all, who didn't know that the new emperor and the eldest daughter of the Yu family were at odds?
Yu Shuyao thought so too. She had even secretly prepared silver needles, ready to stab Su Huaijin until he was half paralyzed if he dared lay a hand on her.
But when night fell, the cold, aloof emperor dismissed everyone, then bent down before Yu Shuyao, his deep eyes reflecting only her.
"After all these years as childhood sweethearts, can you truly not see that from beginning to end, I have only ever intended to marry you?"
Yu Shuyao froze for a moment, unable to respond in time.
She thought he was putting on an act, unaware that an old, yellowed memorial still lay beneath the imperial desk in the study.
It was dated seven years ago, when the late emperor was still alive.
Back then, Su Huaijin was still the crown prince. In his own hand, he had written:
"In this life, I wish for nothing but to marry the Yu family’s daughter. I will never change my heart, even in death. Even if it goes against the emperor’s wishes, I will never consider anyone else."
