My Roommate Still Hasn't Revealed They're an Evil God

In the steam-powered age, London, the world's center and the "City of a Thousand Cities," is said to have evil gods on every corner and heretics as common as dogs. Second-rate detective Helios spends his days catching cheaters and thieves, and looking for lost cats and dogs. Every now and then, he gets entangled with heretics. One day, he rescued a man from a heretic hideout. The man was handsome, refined, and well-spoken. Unfortunately, he seemed a little naive. He'd been swindled as soon as he arrived in London, and now he was broke and had no way to get home. All he wanted was for Helios to let him stay as a lodger for a while. Knowing his new friend would definitely get swindled again if he left, Helios readily agreed. After half a year of getting along splendidly as roommates, Helios snuck into the sacrificial ceremony of London's largest heretic cult. There, he saw a familiar man sitting high upon a divine throne, looking down at the vast, towering hall with an amused, casually mocking smile. The heretics knelt prostrate across the floor, trembling before the evil god. Helios: "Wow." · Of the many evil gods entrenched in London, Alastor is the most powerful and notorious. Every one of the old gods wants to take him down. The reason is simple: he's the god who represents capitalism. The God of Capitalism. The gods want him strung up on a lamppost. He should, in theory, pay no mind to mortals. Hiding his identity would merely be a way to toy with one. But the longer Alastor spent with the little detective, the more he felt something was off about him. Behind his cheerful, straightforward, lively, smiling exterior that brightened everyone else's day, the man himself seemed to be, perhaps, incredibly terrifying... With a sense of impending doom, Alastor slipped away to attend the company's year-end review meeting. He was halfway through chewing out his subordinates when he suddenly spotted his roommate behind them. The other man gazed at him with a pair of curved blue eyes, then gave a meaningful "Wow." Alastor: ...Is it too late to order my subordinates to run for their lives? Reader's Guide ※ A steampunk fantasy setting, similar to Victorian-era London. ※ Not Lovecraftian. The concept of "evil gods" leans toward "heretical gods." ※ An ordinary, fun little story. The two characters should get about the same amount of POV. ※ The historical research isn't strict. It's mostly based on impressions from various works. ※ Lots of original worldbuilding, some Sherlock Holmes references, and plenty of jokes. ※ The current cover is a template. I happened to see one that looked quite like a dragon, so I'm using it for now. I'll replace it with a cover featuring both characters once the commissioned art is ready, haha. Theme: Explore history and seek the truth
