[Revised opening blurb]
After losing her job, Ren Duo rents out her ancestral home and resigns herself to life as a dorm supervisor and landlady. Her tenants pay promptly and keep the place clean. The only drawback is that they get noisy at night.
Every night, Ren Duo has to go around with a hammer, warning each one in turn. She threatens the rows of ceramic urns: If you don't quiet down, I'll scatter you to the winds.
Ren Duo's tenants aren't human. They're all ghosts. Their families have sent them to stay with her because they can't afford burial plots.
One day, an old man brings her an urn made of golden-thread nanmu and puts it in the room at the southeast corner, the spot with the best feng shui. He says he'll come to collect it within six months.
The old man is generous. Six months' rent is equal to three years of her income. Ren Duo accepts with delight. Looking at the quiet, elegant little antique box, she warns the other urns not to bully the newcomer.
That night, all the ghosts are quiet. Suspiciously quiet.
The next day, Ren Duo finds that every urn in the same room has shattered, except for the golden-thread nanmu one.
The ghosts, forced to scatter to the winds, sob: You said not to bully the newcomer! You never said the newcomer would bully us!

2. Inspired by real news stories.
3. It has supernatural elements, but the author is afraid of scaring herself to death, so it's not scary.
