The Female Teacher tells the story of a girl named Yan Yue, who suffers from an incurable illness. In her sleep, her soul transmigrates to a girl named Xiao Xiao in Yuluo Village, Qingzhou, during the reign of Emperor Shenzong of the Northern Song Dynasty. The Song Dynasty valued civil pursuits over military ones, and was a feudal society that favored men over women. Teachers were highly respected, but female teachers were virtually unheard of. After her mother dies and she learns the truth about her origins, she sets out to find her family. Drawing on the modern educational knowledge she has acquired and her own hard work, she endures trial after trial and gradually becomes a female teacher at the Imperial College, the highest institution of learning at the time, and the first woman in the Song Dynasty to educate girls.
