Every day, He Mian joked around, hoping Wei Xuan would answer yes.
But Wei Xuan wouldn't. He was a monk. He had raised her, indulged her, and spoiled her out of compassion, not romantic love. She was simply too greedy, imagining things for no reason.

One afternoon, with cicadas chirping and frogs croaking as torrential rain poured down, He Mian was stranded at the foot of the mountain. Wei Xuan woke from a nap and a nightmare, then hurried down the mountain in a panic to look for her.
He Mian looked at Wei Xuan, drenched and with bloodshot eyes, and began to explain: "Today..."
Before she could finish, Wei Xuan cut her off. His voice was hoarse as he answered her with a single word: "I will!"

After that day, Wei Xuan changed.
Every day, he would write a line in the scriptures he copied: Today, I love you.
He Mian was both startled and delighted. Clinging to him, she asked, "What about tomorrow? Will you still love me tomorrow?"
The next day, Wei Xuan added another line: Tomorrow, too.
For her sake, Wei Xuan left the mountains and entered the imperial court. He ate vegetarian food and prayed to Buddha, yet became a demon in the world, protecting He Mian for the rest of her life and ensuring her peace and happiness.
