Thirty thousand years after the war between the Wu and the Yao, the Investiture of the Gods begins.
Heaven's secrets are thrown into disarray, and a new great tribulation begins. It coincides with the change of dynasties from Shang to Zhou in the human realm. To fill the vacant divine offices in Heaven, the Heavenly Dao issues a decree: Yuxu Palace will take the lead in choosing 365 disciples from the Three Sects to fill the list. This is a tribulation for the Daoist sect, known as the Investiture of the Gods. But the Chan and Jie Sects each serve their own masters, and fellow disciples turn against one another, resorting to any means to get their rivals onto the list. Every faction is drawn into the conflict. To make matters worse, the two sages of the Western Sect fan the flames, deliberately stirring up conflict between the Chan and Jie Sects. Chaos follows, their hostility grows ever more intense, and eventually the two sect leaders turn against each other. The Zhuxian Formation is raised, four sages clash in battle, and the Daoist sect is gravely weakened, while Lingshan reaps the rewards.
Once the Investiture of the Gods is complete and the dust has settled, is there truly a place left for anyone in Heaven or on Earth?

The direct grandson of Zulong, chief of the Dragon Clan, sovereign of the Four Seas, and foremost of the six great Yao sages of the ancient Heavenly Court, Cang Yuan is known throughout the world. He is invincible beneath the sages. After the war between the Wu and the Yao, he rejects the Heavenly Court's offer of amnesty and intervenes in the Investiture of the Gods by himself.
