Everyone in the land knew that Great Yu had an unrivaled, iron-blooded general. This God of War was cold and ruthless, yet fiercely loyal to his sovereign. At just twenty-four, he had campaigned across the realm, conquering three powerful neighboring states for Great Yong and greatly expanding its territory, until the ruler of the Yu dynasty was worshipped by all nations.
Who could have guessed that on the very day the reigning emperor married Cheng Xuyuan, the chancellor's only daughter, and made her his empress, the general would breach the imperial capital, seize the emperor, and force him from the throne?
"You brought this on yourself." Clad in silver armor and seated on the dragon throne, he said coldly to the former emperor, frightening the chancellor's daughter half to death.
Later, people learned that the general had overthrown the emperor because he could no longer bear his oppression and humiliation, becoming the founding emperor of Great Yong. With the change of regime came a sweeping purge of civil officials. To humiliate the former emperor, the new sovereign risked retaining the old dynasty's chancellor and even made the daughter who had never married into the imperial family his empress.
The people had long since grown sick of the tyrannical ruler of Yu, and so they enthusiastically supported the Yong dynasty.
Cheng Xuyuan, however, was dumbfounded. The new dynasty was ruthlessly purging the old regime's core forces. To survive, she had no choice but to wag her tail and beg for mercy like a stray puppy. She played her part so well that no one could match her. Acting was all that kept her alive.
The red candles flickered, and the bridal curtains were warm with spring. Seeing her former boyfriend's face dark with anger, she was absolutely terrified.
"So you finally deign to look at me?" Gu Zhou buried his face in the crook of her neck and slurred drunkenly, "You really are heartless."
Her "husband" was usually so cold he seemed impossible to warm. No matter how hard Cheng Xuyuan tried, she could not win even a hint of tenderness from him. And with several white-lotus beauties constantly appearing before his eyes, her very survival was under serious threat.
It was my fault, all my fault. Sigh, you always have to pay for what you've done. She clenched her fists in secret and resolved to make sure Gu Zhou was completely wrapped around her finger.
