In the sixteenth year of the Zhengde era of the Ming dynasty, Tang Bohu, one of the Four Great Talents of Wuzhong, was already fifty-one. Three years had passed since Xue Kan, a disciple of Wang Yangming, printed the Record of Instructions, which documented Wang Yangming's main philosophical ideas, in Ganzhou. Hai Rui, known as "Hai the Azure Sky," was six by nominal age. Li Shizhen of Qizhou was two. Chen Hongshou, a master hailed as the final peak of Ming dynasty figure painting, would not be born for another eight years. The old and new eras were constantly turning over, but it is worth mentioning that Xu Wei, for whom I would gladly spend half my life in generous devotion and still find it insufficient, was born.
I hope my humble writing can soothe his pain.
