In 1937, after the Battle of Shanghai broke out on August 13, Yu Hongjun led the people in protesting, condemning, and exposing the truth about Japan's invasion of China. Shanghai eventually fell completely.
After learning what had happened, Xia Shaochuan, who had been studying abroad, hurried back to China, hoping to save his hometown and his country in his own way.
He gave up inheriting the family business and joined a newspaper instead, writing furiously to condemn the Japanese army's actions. He entered a family of collaborators and took the opportunity to gather information, which he passed on to the Communists.
But in that family, he met someone... a man, a familiar-looking man named Lu Qingzhou.
Lu Qingzhou: "I only want to learn to read and write. I have no ulterior motives."
Xia Shaochuan: "I know. So... are you willing to come with me? Isn't the reason you want to learn to read and write so that one day you can make something of yourself and stop being ordered around by others?"
Lu Qingzhou: "If I go with you, will you teach me to read and write?"
Xia Shaochuan: "I will. I'll teach you everything I know."
Lu Qingzhou: "All right, then I'll go with you."
