Before the fall of their country and the destruction of their families, Meng Nanfeng and his attendant Mu Han got along well.
Everything changed after their country fell and their families were destroyed.
The enemy breached the city gates, and his father, a great general, died on the battlefield. His mother shielded him with her body and sent him into a secret passage. Mu Han exhausted his inner strength for his sake and was stabbed through the heart by the enemy. After escaping with all his might, he was utterly despondent. For a time, he wanted to die. But he held on. He had to take revenge.
He concealed his identity, lived under an assumed name, and worked to make himself stronger. Then, one day, he unexpectedly ran into Mu Han. Mu Han was alive after all. He was overjoyed.
But he hadn't given up on revenge. In fact, he worked even harder to exact it, resolving to assassinate the emperor.
He began leaving early and returning late. He cultivated connections, prepared weapons, and arranged an escape route.
At last, everything was ready. He rushed back to the little courtyard he shared with Mu Han, intending to tell him his plan. But from a distance, he sensed someone else inside. Holding his breath, he heard a crowd address Mu Han as:
Your Majesty.
He froze. His presence gave him away, and someone soon rushed out of the courtyard. When Mu Han saw him, he fell silent.
He couldn't believe it and demanded an explanation. Mu Han said nothing.
He was the emperor of Hu. His name was Mu Xilin.
At last, he couldn't hold back. He raised his sword and lunged at Mu Xilin. The ministers tried to stop him, but Mu Xilin held them back.
At the final moment, he still couldn't bring himself to do it. But he and Mu Xilin could never be together again.
He turned and ran toward the cliff. Standing at its edge, he smiled at Mu Xilin. "Mu Xilin, I hate you. But I hate you and still can't bring myself to kill you. I'm so weak. You're my enemy, yet I fell in love with you. I can't kill the one I love, and I can't be with my enemy. So death is the only way to be free." He fell backward. When Mu Xilin rushed forward, all he saw was him smiling from among the clouds below the cliff. Then he vanished from sight.
Mu Xilin searched beneath the cliff for seven days, but found only his corpse. As he held the decaying body, his black hair turned white in an instant. He built a vast palace of ice to preserve him. But the man who used to smile and call him "A Han" would never wake again.
He spent the rest of his life alone, never to see him again.
