Lin Shutong gained fifty pounds after developing binge-eating disorder. All the boys who used to chase after her disappeared, and she was glad to have the peace and quiet, until a gloomy puppy named Xi Ye moved in next door.
On rainy days, he would meet her at the subway entrance.
When she picked up a package, he would pretend to bump into her and help carry it.
The rich aroma of food often drifted from her window. He never invited her over to eat, but he would pack up healthy meals and leave them at her door.
When she went running alone at night, she would see the boy's slender, upright figure.
Three months later, a short video of Lin Shutong playing guitar on the street went viral.
It was a charity band thrown together at the last minute. The girl had tied her hair in a high ponytail, and the contrast between her ink-wash-painting features and the powerful clarity of her voice was unforgettable.
The boys who used to chase her came back, but her gloomy puppy had disappeared.

Lin Shutong found Xi Ye by the lake.
Sketches were scattered messily across the grass, and the boy was curled up helplessly on the ground, gasping for breath.
“Are... are you okay?” Lin Shutong looked at his deathly pale face, and her heart began to race. His eyes were tightly shut, as though he might stop breathing at any moment.
In a daze, Xi Ye thought he heard an angel's voice.
A deity, and his salvation.
