[Rekindled romance | Reunion after years apart | Intense push and pull]
They should have been two strangers with nothing in common, but on New Year's Eve in the dead of winter, they collided like flames. A volcano met a planet, and there was no stopping what followed.
Firecrackers boomed outside and the light was murky. Zhou Heyan looked at Jiang Nan, her hair tied in a high ponytail, her eyes curved into a smile as she handed him a new black down jacket. She said, "Happy New Year."
The rebellious boy fell hard.
He watched the night burn around her and said, "I like it."
He liked the first gift he'd ever received, but he liked her, cool and aloof, even more.
Zhou Heyan had been kidnapped by human traffickers and brought to Wendu as a child. He'd had a few warm years, then ended up alone again.
He grew up wild and unruly, with sharp, deep eyes that held no kindness.
Only Jiang Nan, all claws and teeth, would love him. "Don't call yourself a stray dog anymore. You have a home now."
Later, unsurprisingly, that home was gone.
-
They met again ten years later, when everything had changed. Jiang Nan had become the girlfriend of Zhou Heyan's half-brother. He curled his lips, pretended not to know her, and greeted her openly. "Hello, sister-in-law."
Later, his friend told him to steal his awful brother's girlfriend.
Zhou Heyan replied, "What's the rush? She'll be mine sooner or later."
His friend laughed. Everyone said Zhou Heyan was cold and passionless, with nothing but a handsome face and not a woman in sight. But no one knew that he'd spent those ten years in Jiang Nan's hometown, waiting for her.
"Don't just let things happen naturally. If Jiang Nan marries Zhang Bingwen and has a kid, that kid's going to call you Uncle. You'd go crazy."
Crazy? He'd already gone crazy.
He thought Jiang Nan would go crazy with him, but she didn't.
She was clearheaded and heartless. He forced her to kiss him, wanting them to start over, but she said, "I don't want to."
His love for her left him utterly devastated.
There he went, losing again.
-
Zhou Heyan had thought about letting her go, but then Jiang Nan asked him, "Zhou Heyan, do you want to go crazy together, just this once?"
He knew he couldn't get away from her.

Moonlight Shines on Roses
During the summer after graduating from high school, Sheng He got fed up when her father remarried and his fourth wife moved into the family home with her whole family. She packed her bags and moved to a small town far from home.
She rented a little south-facing room.
From the second-floor balcony, she saw a boy leaning against a wall, smoking and looking at the stars.
He had monolids, a buzz cut, and a thin scar across his forehead. After finishing his cigarette, he spat a mouthful of blood against the wall, then looked up at her. "I gave you a free show. Next time, you'll have to pay."
Sheng He looked across the street. Through the open gate, a middle-aged man was cursing as he waved a broken rattan cane. "Get lost, you little bastard."
As the days passed, the beatings grew worse.
Sheng He went from turning a blind eye to grabbing the cane, knocking the man to the ground, smashing his liquor bottle, and glaring at him. "Try hitting him again. I dare you."
The boy pulled her away and asked, "Aren't you scared?"
Sheng He could barely catch her breath. "I am. My legs are shaking, but I know it hurts you too."
2.
His friend noticed Chen Qinian had been acting strangely lately, dressing himself up like a peacock showing off its feathers.
He dyed his blond hair black, ditched his flip-flops, and gradually quit smoking.
He started making more and more deliveries for supermarkets and restaurants, and earning more and more money.
After being asked about it again and again, Chen Qinian smiled. "I want to marry Sheng He."

"I feel like I've become your darkness and a burden." - Chen Qinian
