A fortune teller once said that Xing Yun was born under an ill star: he would spend his life alone, bring misfortune to his wife and children, and never enjoy the blessings of a large family.
Xing Yun paid it no mind, thinking fortune tellers were all frauds. That was until he dated three women in succession. One died in a car accident, another became seriously ill, and the third was caught in a maritime disaster and nearly never had her body recovered. With reality staring him in the face, Xing Yun had no choice but to believe it.
Huo Yan was the village's ill-starred child, cast out when he was young. His father died before he was born, and his mother died when he came into the world. By the time he was four, even his only grandfather had passed away.
So the villagers talked it over and threw him out like a plague god, leaving him to fend for himself. Fortunately, there was a place in the world called an orphanage, and Huo Yan stumbled through life there alone until he grew up.
Then one day, Xing Yun and Huo Yan met. Xing Yun said to him, "How about we give it a try and see which of us can curse the other to death first?"
Later, neither of them died. Xing Yun took Huo Yan by the hand and went home, pleading with his mother through tears: "Please just agree! I bring misfortune to wives and children, but at least I won't bring misfortune to a husband."
