A Story Without a Name

[Don't reopen certain memories lightly. You risk drowning.]

We met in early autumn, parted in midsummer, and found peace in the depths of winter.

In my story, I have loved you for more than ten years.

1.

On the night Wei Man and Zhao Shu parted, the wind was far too gentle.

Wei Man crouched on the steps, trembling as she reached out to Zhao Shu. Weeping, she pleaded, "Zhao Shu, will you hold my hand one last time?"

Zhao Shu stopped and looked back at her, his voice cold and calm.

He said, "There's no need."

Watching Zhao Shu stride away, Wei Man crouched on the steps and sobbed uncontrollably.

2.

Over the long years that followed, they ultimately became parallel lines that would never meet again.

Until Wei Man returned to that summer night when she and Zhao Shu had torn apart.

This time, Zhao Shu took her hand, and they never parted again.

One day after they got together, Wei Man was playing Fight the Landlord on Zhao Shu's phone. After losing all his game beans, she inexplicably tapped into his Moments.

Zhao Shu's Moments cover had been dark for many years. There had only ever been one post: the song "Ten Miles of Spring Breeze" by the band Lu Xiansen, shared on July 9, 2017, the summer they graduated.

With a trembling hand, Wei Man tapped the privacy setting beneath the post: Visible only to Manman.
