On the first day of school, No. 9 High School got a transfer student. Rumor had it he came from the best private school in the province, so everyone guessed he must have been expelled for terrible grades.

Bai Yan: Why did you come here? Did your family go broke? Can't afford the tuition?

You Ye: Mm, my family went broke.

Bai Yan looked at his designer clothes and thought he had probably been expelled.

With the monthly exams coming up, Bai Yan chased You Ye around, trying to tutor him. You Ye was on the verge of a breakdown, but Bai Yan assumed he was despairing because he couldn't learn no matter how hard he studied.

You Ye: I really am a top student!

Bai Yan: A top student who got a 73 in math?

You Ye: ...

Bai Yan: Come here. Study.

After the monthly exams, Bai Yan looked at the rankings, then gave him a complicated look.

You Ye: ...You were the one who didn't believe me.

B. The heartfelt version:

At ten, two boys met by chance. The older boy told the younger one, "Don't be scared. Your big brother will protect you."

At sixteen, they unexpectedly met again at No. 9 High School. You Ye said nonchalantly to Bai Yan, "Since fate brought us together, how about I protect you for the rest of your life?"

At eighteen, while filling out his college applications, You Ye smiled at Bai Yan and said, "I can't help it. I promised to protect you for life."

At twenty, in college, You Ye held Bai Yan's hand as he slept and lowered his eyes. "I have to protect you, Bai Yan."

At twenty-two, after graduating, You Ye wrote on the message wall, "Your big brother will protect you for life."

At twenty-six, You Ye faced the crowd and shouted at Bai Yan, "Bai Yan! We've been engaged for so long, and we still haven't gotten married. What happened to forever?"

Bai Yan gazed at him fondly. His answer had been the same for years: "Mm. Forever."
