After transmigrating, she found herself neither born into a powerful family nor stranded in some impoverished backwater. Instead, she had conveniently been reborn as the only daughter of a county magistrate, with both beauty and brains.
Far from the imperial court, Lin Yuqin thought she must have been born lucky. Here, she could throw her weight around like a spoiled young lady and stir up all the trouble she pleased.
Until one day, her father stood at the village entrance holding a boy's hand and said to her with a smile, "A-Qin, this is your younger brother."
She couldn't see the boy's eyes. His head was bowed, his hair hiding every trace of expression.
Lin Yuqin assumed he was her father's illegitimate child. She turned to look at him. He was still shorter than her, but carried an indescribable air of pride and nobility. His cold glance sent a chill through her, even on a sunny day.
"A country bumpkin," she heard him say.

Lin Yuqin didn't like Lu Yangzhao.
She was clearly kindhearted enough to give him medicine, but he not only failed to appreciate it, he tore her favorite silk clothes the moment he arrived and even bit her delicate wrist.
And that wasn't all. He seemed to have his eye on her little stash of money, too. When threats and bribes failed, he tried coaxing and deceiving her, insisting they go to that blasted capital.
But she did like the way Lu Yangzhao looked, especially his cool, distant gaze that somehow left room for the imagination.
So Lin Yuqin spared no effort trying to figure out how to discipline him and bring him to heel.
It wasn't until an imperial decree arrived at the Lin residence that Lu Yangzhao's background came to light. He wasn't an ordinary boy at all, but the emperor's own nephew.
Everything suddenly turned upside down.
When she was forced to go to the capital, Lin Yuqin knew he had ulterior motives, but still tried to avoid facing them. Late one night, she went alone to his residence, only to have to kneel and bow. "My lord, you ought to call me Elder Sister. You shouldn't interfere in matters between a man and a woman."
She put it delicately, hoping he would back down.
"You merely raised me."
Lu Yangzhao gave a soft scoff. Looking down at her, he gently brushed his fingertips over her neck and said slowly, "Even if you had given birth to me, do you really think I care about propriety and shame?"
