As other people put it, I'm a rich kid several generations removed. Judging by the family tree we can still make out, we've been pretty well-off since the Tang dynasty. My family has always built houses for a living. By my father's generation, the job had acquired a more artistic title: architect.

My dad was doing his master's in architecture at Tsinghua at the time, and my mom was a professor in the School of Liberal Arts at Nanjing University. Going further back, my maternal grandfather was also a professor there. Our family certainly had good genes when it came to intelligence.

But something went wrong when I was a kid. I don't know how, but I turned out... different.

Still, I have one great strength.

I'm good-looking. My mom says being good-looking is still useful these days.

And she's right. Back when I was still a rookie, that one advantage saved my life more than once.

After I turned twenty, my life truly began.
