P.S. 1. This novel has fantasy elements. The gong has an omniscient perspective and a slight golden finger. 2. Strictly speaking, this novel has two points of view. The hidden storyline follows Qiu Jie (the gong) during his lifetime, while the main storyline follows the crown prince (the shou) inside the book. In fact, the two storylines unfold at the same time. Their stories are complete and independent, yet intertwined in countless ways. They are both fully realized individuals, and neither can be viewed solely through the other, so the story is split evenly between their perspectives. 3. This is a fictional setting, truly fictional. The author studied science and is weak on history, so there’s really no historical research to be done. 4. The gong is a bit of a madman (but a coward when it comes to his wife). He isn’t actually mentally ill; he’s perfectly healthy. 5. There’s some angst in the middle, but it’s not angst between the main couple, just plot-related angst. Happy ending.
