[Full manuscript complete. Read with confidence.]
Things started to go wrong when a hunched old woman with a mute girl appeared upstairs from the coffee shop where Jian Yi worked part-time.
A mad woman bundled up in a down jacket in the blazing summer heat, looking for her son.
Yellow paper ingots and a cloth doll stuffed with hair under a white lantern.
A wet pink hair tie hanging in an ancient well whose water reflected no one.
A corpse walking around the Central Park late at night, covered in talismans.
A popular streamer investigating a haunted funeral home, where a corpse came back to life and nearly killed him.
A bride in a traditional wedding dress, her mouth sewn shut, appearing in a new residential complex.
"Hey, hey, don't ask, don't ask!"
Chen Shi seemed to know what Jian Yi wanted to ask, but he reached out first and pressed a knuckle against Jian Yi's soft lips. With an inscrutable air, he winked at him, then shook his head and recited, "All the people of this world drift with the current, like duckweed upon the water. Yet though you and I seem adrift, our roots have long been intertwined. A person's life, their fortune, misfortune, lifespan, and fate are all predestined. As the saying goes, Heaven's will cannot be questioned, and mysteries cannot be spoken. This is the great truth of the universe, unchanged for all eternity..."
Though he spoke in riddles, Chen Shi did find Jian Yi in the end. He stayed by his side, became the lonely man destined to bear his misfortune, and paid for his life with his own, and for his calamity with his love.
