Once I Got Good and Drunk

[An old story about a lesbian falling for a straight woman. Digging it up to let it bask in the sun.] Chen Zhuo once believed the saying that women are born bisexual. No one's orientation is impossible to change; some girls just haven't tried hard enough. Only later did she realize that Meng Wujiao was the exception. She had been secretly in love with Meng Wujiao for nineteen years, like a moth flying into a flame, like Chang'e flying to the moon. At the celebration banquet in the twentieth year, Meng Wujiao finally sat beside her. The lights were dazzling, the candlelight hazy. Chen Zhuo was drunk, her cheeks flushed as she leaned against Meng Wujiao's shoulder. Meng Wujiao was busy looking for medicine for her, one arm still gently around her. Happiness felt so close it was almost dreamlike. Then Chen Zhuo saw the diamond ring on her middle finger. "He proposed to me." Meng Wujiao could no longer hold back her happy smile. She handed Chen Zhuo some hangover medicine she'd found in her bag. "You have to come to the engagement party." Chen Zhuo felt as though her voice had flown in from the edge of the sky, then shattered beside her ear. She pushed herself up from Meng Wujiao's shoulder, took the medicine, and swallowed it in one gulp. "Okay." Once sober, they would only be friends. The next morning, when she woke up, life had to go on. Chen Zhuo thought she would be unable to sort out her feelings after twenty years of unrequited love, unable to keep to her place like a good friend. In reality, Chen Zhuo did a very good job, or rather, too good a job. So the wedding was called off, because Meng Wujiao went mad.
