That year, Ting Lan came back from outside and picked up a dog, so she kept him.

The dog was loyal and honest, did whatever she told him, and always obeyed her.

Aside from crouching under her bed in the middle of the night, peeking through the window while she bathed, hiding inside the doll she hugged before bed, and climbing into bed to bite her whenever the moon was full, he wasn't so bad.

Her little dog, her boy, always looked at her with red-rimmed eyes. He stood helplessly before her, blood-red lips, deathly pale skin, bruised-black eyes, both lovesick and pitiful.

Every night, he knelt before her bed, his breathing soft and obedient, his fringe trembling against his forehead, the light by the bed trembling over his delicate face. But nothing except her could light up those dark eyes of his.

Like a newly born evil spirit on a snowy night, he found neither warmth nor a place to belong in the human world. Every hurried passerby had a blank face and seemed as fragile as paper.

Ting Lan told him to stand up and stop kneeling while he talked. As soon as he stood, she yanked him toward her, and they both fell onto the bed. Ting Lan's hair came loose, and she could smell her own fragrance. Just as expected, her little dog grew restless. A sick, greedy desire appeared in his eyes, twisting his face out of shape.

It was a little frightening, but Ting Lan liked it. She thought it was cute.

"I can still protect one evil spirit."

She smiled sweetly, her eyes bright, her lips red and her teeth white.
