The Eunuch

Wei Tan had recently acquired a shadow. While he manipulated court affairs and plotted with perfect precision, she lay on the high beam of the Hall of Supreme Harmony, wiggling her toes at him. While he was vicious and bloodthirsty in the torture chamber, she leaned against the wall of the private prison, munching seeds with relish. She was there when he was awake and there when he slept. She was there when he stood above everyone, and even when he sank into the mud. This shadow couldn't be beaten into submission, scolded into leaving, outrun, or shaken off... He had no choice but to put up with her. Just as he had finally convinced himself that he could tolerate this shadow for the rest of his life, she vanished in the blink of an eye. * Wei Tan pinned his shadow to the bed, his voice hoarse. His bloodshot eyes narrowed like a venomous snake's, and he bit her pale lips until they tasted of blood. "Li Xing, you think you can get away after provoking me?" A wisp of smoke slowly escaped the lips of the woman beneath him. "...Lord Eunuch, are you still going to say you don't love me?"
