Someone once told me that the sunset over the desert was beautiful. So I came to the desert.
The windblown, sandy desert really did have a beautiful sunset. For the sake of that beauty, I left my beautiful hometown and settled here.
The year I came to the desert, I was fifteen, in the bloom of youth. My skin was so soft you could squeeze water from it, and I was like a lovely flower in the springtime south of the Yangtze, so beautiful I outshone the sun.
Now, the once-delicate face has long been marked by the desert. The bright color has faded from the red silk dress I wore back then; it lies at the bottom of a trunk, a mere memory. A coarse cloth dress and a wooden hairpin are all the adornment I have.
All for that beautiful sunset. I stayed, and ten years passed!
In the desert, there is an inn called Dusk. Merchants traveling north and south across the desert all stop here to rest and replenish their supplies before continuing their journeys.
At my Dusk Inn, it is just me, two helpers, and an old horse, keeping one another company.
Our facilities are simple, our food plain, and our surroundings harsh. We have no delicacies, but we carry on, strong and unyielding.
