During the Yongle era, Ji Gang served as an Assistant Commissioner of the Chief Military Commission and commanded the Embroidered Uniform Guard. Deeply favored by the Yongle Emperor, he became a powerful minister who wielded tremendous influence. Later, fearing that Ji Gang's unchecked power would endanger the Ming Empire, the emperor ordered Li You, son of the Duke of Cao, to serve as an Assistant Commissioner of the Embroidered Uniform Guard and investigate Ji Gang's crimes. Zhou Nianzhi, daughter of the Minister of the Court of Judicial Review, was bound to Li You by a marriage contract. Her father, Zhou Zhiqing, was unwilling to become related by marriage to the Duke of Cao, so she had been dressed as a boy ever since birth. The two, who had known each other since childhood, fell in love, but Zhou's identity as a girl made it impossible for them to speak openly about their feelings. Together with their friend Xu Zhaoting, they solved one murder case after another and uncovered evidence of Ji Gang's crimes, ultimately bringing him to justice. After all they went through, the three of them each found their own happiness.
