The matchmaker said, "He's handsome, refined, mature, dependable, and has a stable job with good prospects."
Going by the online code words for blind dates, Qiao Zhixia concluded that the man was a bespectacled, tall, utterly useless guy who looked old, was dull, and earned a monthly salary of 3,000 with no chance of promotion.
So she went to the date with greasy hair she hadn't washed in three days, only to find...
Qiao Zhixia slapped her thigh. "I was too hasty!"
The man was impeccably dressed in a suit, elegant and charming. Sitting there, he was a gorgeous sight to behold.
Qiao Zhixia thought to herself: The matchmaker is truly a paragon of the profession, but how can she be so short on words that she described a high-quality man like that so blandly? If she were writing about him, she could easily pad it out to three thousand words.
But when the man looked up, Qiao Zhixia nearly died on the spot.
He was Jiang Zheng'an, the top student and campus heartthrob she'd had a crush on in high school, as well as her desk mate.
One day, a famous author plagiarized and copied elements from Qiao Zhixia's work, then turned around and accused her, landing her in the middle of an online pile-on.
With no other choice, she sought help from her old classmate Jiang Zheng'an, a lawyer rumored to be able to get the opposing lawyer sent to prison.
While gathering evidence, her old crush was accidentally exposed.
Qiao Zhixia tried to save face with a bold retort: "Is having a crush a crime?"
As Jiang Zheng'an went through her writing line by line, he replied, "It's not a crime. It's foolish."
Later, at a high school reunion, a drunk Jiang Zheng'an pulled Qiao Zhixia into a corner and kissed her, his gaze dark and intense.
Qiao Zhixia pretended to be calm. "A spur-of-the-moment decision?"
His warm breath brushed her ear as he said hoarsely, "I've been plotting this for ages. Having a crush is foolish."
[Bonus Scene]
One day, Qiao Zhixia happened to find an old photograph tucked inside one of Jiang Zheng'an's books.
In the photo, she had taken up most of the desk, sleeping with earphones in. A boy in a blue-and-white school uniform, Jiang Zheng'an, had been squeezed to the side. He looked at her helplessly, with a bright smile, while still holding up a book to fan her.
On the back of the photo, a line of elegant handwriting read: Back in school, you took up half the desk. Now you take up half the bed too :)
