Tower, Hello

On the day Hao Mingyue started her job, a senior colleague told her, "The pilots who come through here love picking on new female controllers." So she resolved not to make a single mistake, just in case she became the pilots’ favorite topic over tea. This top-performing air traffic controller did exactly that. With her demanding workload and flawless record, she became the employee of the year. That is, until one day, when newly appointed civil aviation captain Lucas Clark shattered her perfect record. Hao Mingyue: "Delta 89, this is the tower. QNH 1005. Runway 19, cleared to land." Lucas Clark: "Emmm... Cleared to land, Runway 19, Delta 89." Hao Mingyue: Oh no, oh no, oh no! My vacation turned my brain to mush. It’s my first day back at work in the new year, and I didn’t notice it was an English-speaking crew! Is my undefeated record really going to end like this? Lucas Clark: "!!! I’m so good! I’ve only flown two flights to China, and I’ve already learned Chinese!" * Hao Mingyue: "Delta 89, tower. QNH 1010, Runway 19..." Lucas Clark: "!!! Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!" Theme: In a crisis, can people set aside all their feelings and find the optimal solution? In an age when artificial intelligence is everywhere, will air traffic control disappear as a profession?
