She writes: “The princess worked hard today. I’ve decided to make her something delicious. I’m thinking of Wellington steak, but we don’t have any beef or butter.” The next day’s entry: “The princess said the beggar’s lamb ribs turned out great, and told me not to make them again...” The career version: As long as Xie Zhen remains the heir to the Yan Dynasty, even if the halls of power loom over her and she is torn from her own flesh and blood, she will never cling shamefully to life, nor let her people be slaughtered and suffer in a boiling cauldron. As for Lan Wei, she doesn’t care whether she is a general of the Yan Dynasty. She has simply grown used to accompanying the princess, and no storm or hardship can keep her from her side. Reader advisory: No hidden-gender or gender-equality settings. The historical backdrop follows the transition from the Yuan to the early Ming dynasty. Theme: A wild fantasy about liberating women from the feudal era through an industrial revolution
