Date Long Enough, Marry for Sure

Sang Nian was the illegitimate daughter the Sang family kept hidden from view. Quiet and reserved since childhood, and not good with words, she had long followed Huo Yan around, serving as an utterly forgettable sidekick.

As the younger son of the Huo family, Huo Yan had spent more than twenty years living as freely as he pleased. Lately, however, he'd developed a small problem.

He realized that his little sidekick, Sang Nian, seemed to have a thing for him.

Then one day, after he'd had too much to drink and happened to see his ever-busy older brother, Huo Yan let the alcohol loosen his tongue and shared this sweet little problem. "Bro, what if Sang Nian really likes me? Maybe you should take her off my hands?"

Huo Yan teased Huo Zhen, half-joking.

The man leaning against the sofa lifted his eyes and gave a smile that was hard to read. He replied just as ambiguously, "Sure."

Huo Yan burst out laughing. "Don't mess with me, bro. She's not your type."

Sang Nian, standing outside the door, stopped listening and left as quietly as she'd come.

Huo Zhen set down his glass and said softly, "How do you know she's not my type?"

Huo Yan sobered up in an instant and couldn't say a word.

But he couldn't deny that, for a moment, he felt secretly pleased. His brother, the family's golden boy, could actually stumble sometimes.

After all, Sang Nian had a crush on him.

Later, when the Sang family planned to marry their illegitimate daughter off to a divorced man nearing forty, Huo Yan figured he ought to rescue Sang Nian from her plight.

That afternoon, before he could go looking for Sang Nian, he saw his "secret admirer" rise onto her toes and kiss his own older brother in the garden!

Sang Nian had lived her whole life by the rules. The most outrageous thing she'd ever done was kiss Huo Zhen on the lips while he slept, saying goodbye to the love she knew would never come to anything.

But Sang Nian didn't know that what she thought was her own careful, quiet affection was all part of Huo Zhen's careful plan.

The hunter had long since set his trap, waiting for his prey to walk into the "cage" one step at a time.
