To the east of the land lies the Eastern Sea, and the sea has a shore. There is a young man: his lips are not red, his teeth are not white, his clothes are not bright, and his horse does not prance. No dragon emblem adorns him, and his background is nothing special. People say he has no poetry or books in his belly; he himself says he has no grand ambitions.
There is also an emperor in the land. Then his consort stirs up chaos, the ruler is ignorant, and his ministers are unworthy. The world falls into decline, and the times grow troubled. By chance, he meets a noble patron, and the retainers urge him to rise. Ou Xian smiles and says, "Look at the court today, and you'll see: to know the times is the highest form of strategy!"
