The author is male. By shifting perspective and narrative voice, he tells a series of everyday stories from the perspective of his girlfriend, about five young women. The five girls have very different personalities, yet are destined to come together. Most of what happens in the story is tragic, and it also reflects the callousness in human nature brought about by society in this era. The story ends in tragedy, leaving readers with endless regret and emotion. It is true to life, and much of the novel is drawn from the author's own experiences, distilled and elevated into a story.
