One day, a fair-skinned, quiet Jiangnan boy who cared for nothing but his studies arrived in Class 10, Grade 11, at a university-affiliated high school in the Northeast.
He didn't seem to know the rules, though. He walked into class without greeting Xu Jingmeng, the school bully, and quietly sat down to read.
Xu Jingmeng, the class's worst student and a frequent fighter, marched over with her fists raised. If you wouldn't come to me, then I'd come to you.
She snatched the book he was reading, showing off her hooligan side, and snarled, "Do you know who I am?"
The boy, interrupted in his reading, showed not the slightest displeasure. He was like a statue without a trace of emotion.
He didn't even look at her. "I don't." Then he took out another book and continued reading.
Ignored, Xu Jingmeng was so angry she wanted to beat him until he was on his knees begging her to spare him.
She bent down and grabbed him by the collar, gritting her teeth as she whispered in his ear, "I'm Xu Jingmeng. Got that?"
The boy wasn't as flustered as she'd expected. His gentle voice sounded beside her ear. "Is that 'Jingmeng' as in 'a faint rumble of thunder rouses one from a dream'? Or 'Jingmeng' as in 'cold steals over the pillow, startling the pair of mandarin ducks from their dream'?"
Xu Jingmeng froze. He was so eloquent, how was she supposed to know which one he meant?
Seeing her stunned expression, he slowly took his book back from her hand and shifted away.
"You should read more, Jingmeng. Don't be all brawn and no brains."

It was drizzling after school that day.
The boy walked through a small alley by the school, holding a dark teal oil-paper umbrella.
In the rain, he saw Xu Jingmeng, the school bully who was always teasing him, surrounded by several burly men. She stood in the middle, looking ready to face death.
Just as a fight was about to break out, someone tapped Xu Jingmeng on the shoulder and put an oil-paper umbrella in her hand. The boy's oversized school jacket was draped over her head.
"Boys fight. Girls, step aside," he said.
