The Girl Group's Million-Dollar Escape

What would you do if one day you happened to scroll past a fanciful short video titled "What If You Were Reborn as a Girl Group Member," and then it suddenly came crashing into reality?

Ordinary office worker Xu Zhinai has already come up with an answer for you.

She's a textbook example of a wage slave: her salary is just enough to cover rent and her online shopping bills, and every day she's battered by KPIs and DingTalk in turn. Her only respite is curling up under the covers to watch short videos, keeping herself alive with performances by pretty girls. One late night, she accidentally tapped on a girl group fantasy video. The screen went black, and a flashy pop-up appeared...

There were no bizarre sound effects or threatening countdowns. The System interface was even kind of cute and pink. It simply dangled a carrot: as long as she safely lived out a girl group's life, she'd get a million yuan deposited straight into her account upon completion.

Before each trip to a parallel world, however, she had to spin a giant random wheel. Her looks, build and height, singing and dancing talent, role in the group, and nationality were all up to fate. She might end up with a face fit for the center spot but be a useless dancer, or be a powerful vocalist with an utterly forgettable face. She could even be born with citizenship in a foreign country, unable to speak the language and forced to learn from scratch.

But here's the thing: she didn't have to defy fate or work herself to the bone fighting for the center spot. All she needed to do was live out the life assigned to her, one step at a time. The mirrored practice room floors, the blinding lights on music-show stages, and the everyday life of teammates who sometimes shared a few romantic sparks and sometimes fought like cats and dogs could all be enjoyed as an immersive experience.

And so, ordinary office worker Xu Zhinai embarked on an unusual side hustle: experiencing the ups and downs of life as a dazzling idol while quietly saving money, waiting for the text alerts announcing each huge payment to arrive.

After all, life is hard enough already. This time, she wanted to try living a whole life without pushing herself quite so hard.
