·
Wushuang met a rather troublesome hanged ghost in the underworld.
She had read his fortune. If he had remained a prince, he would have lived a life of wealth and comfort. Unfortunately, he became emperor halfway through his life, and his dynasty fell.
·
Wushuang wanted to be reincarnated, so she went to Master Fan.
Master Fan told her, "When he was alive, he had three women by his side. The first was his childhood sweetheart, the second died with a grudge, and the third shared life and death with him. They were all the ones he loved most. Which one would you like to be?"
Wushuang said, "I'll try each one."
·
"Why Wushuang?"
One year, during the White Dew season, Prince Xin asked her this.
Wushuang replied, "The world is unfeeling, so the autumn night is free of frost."
Prince Xin picked up a withered ginkgo leaf and pinched its stem between his fingers. "Wrong, wrong. The season hasn't arrived yet, and the dew isn't heavy enough."
At the end of the month, a thick fog blew in from the north. Shuntian Prefecture sank into an unprecedented silence, and word came from the palace that the emperor was gravely ill.
On the Ding Si day of that same month, Prince Xin succeeded to the throne and changed the era name to Chongzhen.
That day was the twenty-fourth of the eighth month, precisely the day of Frost's Descent.
Only then did Wushuang understand: what Prince Xin had wanted to ask that day was not why there was no frost, but when frost would come.
He had calculated this day long ago.
·
Many years later, Wushuang once again pushed open the gate to Prince Xin's residence. There was no pear tree laden with blossoms, only a young man in bright clothes astride a fine horse.
He said, "So what if the realm no longer belongs to the Zhu family? You are the moonlight shining beside my bed."
(Chongzhen x little female ghost, one-on-one romance. The plot is purely fanciful. I'm tired of writing history straight, so I wanted to write something lighthearted.)
