To guide an ordinary person toward immortality, one must usually pass through three stages:

(2) Single-minded focus
(3) Surviving tribulations and ascending
But the cultivators Immortal Guide Su Weiyun encountered somehow reached an entirely different stage: they didn't want to become immortals!

Years later, Su Weiyun finally learned that the down-on-his-luck immortal's true goal wasn't to help her guide mortals, but to "guide" her into becoming a mortal!
