That was the first time Chen Xiao saw Wang Tong. The nine-year-old boy was dressed in a pink robe, crouching beneath a pear tree and gathering petals.

Chen Xiao went up to him and asked, "Are you Wang Tong?"

The boy looked up and smiled. "I am." Then he lowered his head and went back to picking up petals.

Chen Xiao didn't know why he was gathering them, but she wanted to get his attention, so she quickly crouched down beside him and reached out to pick up petals too.

The boy looked up at her but said nothing. Instead, he tossed the handful of petals in his hands over her, a delighted look on his face. Then he stood up and looked at Chen Xiao, who was still crouching. "When we grow up, I'll marry you."

Chen Xiao looked at Wang Tong through the petals. The boy was exquisitely handsome, with a pair of bewitching fox eyes and long lashes reflected in his dark pupils. Chen Xiao stood up, ruffled his soft hair, and held out her little finger, saying affectionately, "A promise between gentlemen."

The boy tilted his face up and held out his little finger, hooking it with hers. "I'm a boy, so I always keep my word."
