When Ruan Nanchu first met Ji Siyan, Beicheng was blanketed in fog, and she'd just been dumped by her first love.
The sky was dark, and white mist filled the air.
She sat beneath a streetlamp in a transparent raincoat, hugging her Spanish textbook. Raindrops battered her, splashing water onto the dark green hem of her skirt. A sliver of her leg showed, pale and slender, and her lashes seemed beaded with moisture.
The young driver got out to check on her. He stubbed out his cigarette with one hand and gave her an unusually curious glance through the fog. "Got your heart broken, so you don't even want your umbrella anymore?"
Born into privilege, Mr. Ji was called "President Ji" by his secretary, "Siyan" by his friends, and simply "Mr. Ji" by the countless people who came to him for help.
At their most intimate, Ruan Nan would press close to his ear and call him, shyly, "A-Yan."
Everyone around her said Ji Siyan was frivolous, cold, and heartless, with no sincerity in him.
Ruan Nan didn't believe them.
Then she lost everything and fled on a night flight.
But that night, a flight leaving Beicheng was delayed because of one person.
When the fog finally lifted, the aloof Mr. Ji crossed the airport alone in the dead of night. For once, he wanted to travel with someone until dawn.
"There's no one else. Only you, Nannan."
He still called her Nannan.
- "All my life, I've been frivolous and defiant. You are the tide that makes me long for the shore."
