A princess who is cool and innocent at first, then turns dark and seeks revenge × a hostage prince who pretends to be a harmless pig but is actually just lazy
Synopsis:
At a banquet, Chun An accidentally had her clothes splashed by someone. She had no choice but to get up and change in a side hall. Passing by the rockery in the rear courtyard, she heard the sounds of punches and kicks, interrupted now and then by faint, muffled groans.
She pretended to have dropped a hair ornament. When the people saw her, their eyes went wide and they scattered to look for it, leaving only He Zhizhang lying on the ground in silence.
His deep, dark gaze was like that of a long-lurking wolf. It made her uneasy, and she hurried away.
Later, by chance, she helped him a few more times.
Until she saw him with her own eyes, his expression cold as he told someone else, “I was only using her.”
Later, a new emperor took the throne in Great Chu. Chun An lost everything overnight and was forced to marry into the Jin Kingdom.
She married He Zhizhang, the one person she never wanted to see again in her life.
But he seemed like a different person.
When He Zhizhang was a hostage in Chu, he was bullied by hostages from other kingdoms. He kept his eyes dark and silently endured it for the time being.
Killing them would have been easy, but he didn’t want to invite trouble just yet.
The naive princess of Chu thought he was weak and useless, and helped him out of trouble time and again.
He simply went along with it, too lazy to explain.
But when he learned that this princess treated everyone that way, and had also helped another hostage, things spiraled out of control.
That fool had the nerve to provoke him. His eyes bloodshot, he clenched his fists and let cruel words spill from his mouth. It became the thing he regretted most.
Bonus scenes:
1.
Even He Zhizhang, who usually looked half asleep, sometimes had no choice but to stay alert.
When Chun An was pregnant with their daughter Mianmian, her feet swelled terribly. Every night, after finishing his memorials, he still had to massage her feet for half the night. He always kept a damp cloth by the bed.
When Chun An felt so uncomfortable that she started crying, each tear landed on his heart. He instinctively reached out to wipe them away with his fingertip, but the young woman turned her head aside.
He Zhizhang’s hand froze. He sheepishly dried his hands before daring to pull her into his arms and gently soothe her.
2.
Chun An’s moods became especially hard to read when she was giving birth. He often saw her holding the newborn Mianmian and crying, her face tilted up to reveal the lovely line of her neck, unwilling to let him see her tears.
He Zhizhang lost quite a bit of hair worrying about her.
His girl held their daughter in her arms while muttering to herself.
He had to draw on every bit of his martial arts training before he could make out the words: “Not pretty,” “It’s okay,” and “Mommy hurts.”
Afterward, he specifically invited the parents of other newborns who looked like wrinkly little monkeys to a banquet at the palace. Only then did Chun An press her lips together and let the corners of her mouth lift a little.
