Out of Africa

A danmei work based on the Japanese manga Slam Dunk. Please don't read if you don't know what danmei is or are uncomfortable with it.

Set in Tangier, an international free city in northwestern Morocco during World War II (though the story of the film Casablanca should really have taken place here), it tells of the brief encounter between Sendoh, a French writer, and Rukawa, an American pilot, and their reunion on another free continent: North America.

Excerpt:

“What if the pilot doesn't come back?”

“He will. He promised the writer he'd come back alive.”

“He's only an ordinary person. Even though he made that promise, he isn't sure he can keep it. He just doesn't want the person he loves to lose hope.”

“But the writer still believes he'll return. So he decides to keep waiting, and waiting.”

“That sounds a little naive.”

Sendoh smiled. “Naivety is one of the human qualities he admires.”
