"Grenos." Mordred's voice made her skull tremble. Beads of blood seeping through the gaps in her dragon scales scorched holes into her custom-made Victorian evening gown.
With the Thames' fishy wind at her back, Mordred swept Grenos into a shattered stained-glass window. Beneath the moonlight, platinum-blond and black hair tangled together.
The low moan spilling from her throat was just like the one she had uttered three months earlier, when they had made love at Claude Manor.
"I love you, Mordred!" Grenos laughed softly against her bloodied scales, fingertips caressing the red mark on the back of her neck.
She was both the mastermind on Downing Street and the princess who had tamed Britain's artificial Red Dragon.
"Your head bows only to King Arthur."
"My head bows only to you." Mordred After smiled as she lifted the Downing Street princess's black hair, leaving an acid-burn kiss behind her ear. "Soon, we'll be together forever."
Big Ben's chimes broke apart before dawn.
Grenos stood atop the spire of the Shard, tossing her bloodstained white glove toward Parliament Square, now lost in thick fog.
Mordred's ribbon crumbled into stardust in her palm. It was the last gift left behind from the day they first met.
The Red Dragon's corpse became a blood-red dawn over the Thames.
At last, Grenos saw the shattered reflection in Mordred's eyes: Britain's final night, and the thorn-crowned king I could never touch.
