Evil God

In the first year of their marriage, Alan's husband passed the imperial examinations. Alan was delighted.

But the servant who came to announce the good news said that her husband had gone to a banquet at a brothel.

That night, her husband came home with a black eye and a swollen face. Someone had apparently put a sack over his head and beaten him.

Alan gently applied medicine to his wounds.

In the second year of their marriage, Alan's husband secretly kept a mistress. He was swindled out of a large sum of money and got entangled in a lawsuit for abducting a young woman.

Alan came up with a plan to help him escape trouble, but as a result, he lost an official post that had been within his grasp. He was furious.

She urged him to study hard. If he passed the civil service examinations, he could become a high-ranking official.

In the third year of their marriage, Alan's husband wanted to take a concubine.

Alan agreed. Everyone praised her generosity and envied her husband for marrying such an open-minded, virtuous wife.

The next day, Alan returned to her hometown to visit her family.

Following a mountain path, Alan entered a ruined temple overgrown with moss and looked at the old, faded statue behind the offering table.

She had visited this temple once before and made a wish to the god.

A god required an offering, so she found a pretty flower in the mountains, placed it in the statue's hand, and hoped the god would like it.

The god liked it very much, stroked her face, and told her that her wish had come true.

She went home happily and was delighted to discover that her father was dead.

Today, Alan came to worship the god again, not for her dead father or her husband's concubine.

She came for her husband.
