Synopsis One:
On the day Princess Baozhang Shen Siyan married, a procession of lavish wedding gifts stretched ten li through the city.
Her husband, Yun Yan, was a refined and elegant top scorer in the imperial exams, a gentleman as upright as jade and as polished as inkstone.
Only after their wedding did Shen Siyan learn that Yun Yan had long kept a woman in his heart, his white moonlight, and now he was keeping her in a residence outside the home.
Not wanting to disappoint her father, the emperor, who had arranged the marriage, Shen Siyan set aside her pride and treated Yun Yan with even greater tenderness, caring for him day and night when he fell ill.
She thought that sincere devotion would eventually be returned in kind. Instead, her husband's mistress, pregnant with his child, came to the princess's residence and trampled all over her dignity.
At last, her disappointment reached its limit. Shen Siyan flung a divorce agreement in Yun Yan's face. To her surprise, the usually aloof top scorer stepped in front of her, his face filled with regret and reluctance. "I will never abandon my wife!"
Synopsis Two:
Shen Siyan, Princess Baozhang, was adored by everyone and had enjoyed eighteen years of good fortune.
Then the imperial throne changed hands, the court fell into turmoil, and her husband betrayed her. The most precious flower in all of Great Jin was suddenly cast into the mud.
For the sake of her frail older brother, the emperor, and her still-young nephew, she gritted her teeth and, though terrified deep down, swallowed her pride and entered Zhou Jingzhi's residence.
They said this powerful minister was kind in appearance but ruthless at heart, with a mind full of twists and turns that no one could fathom. Everyone at court feared him.
Shen Siyan thought they had shared some history, and he would never make things difficult for a woman. But she was wrong. He seemed intent only on bullying and humiliating her, making the eldest princess bow her head and serve the powerful.
Synopsis Three:
A tranquil heart shines with still, clear light. Before Zhou Jingzhi left the monastery, his Buddhist name was Chengzhan.
As a boy, he was sent to a temple by his love-mad mother to train as a monk. He thought he had left the mortal world behind for good. Then Emperor Jinming asked him to pray for Princess Baozhang on the day of her wedding. Watching Shen Siyan in her fiery red bridal gown, her slender waist swaying with each delicate step, her pale wrists showing beneath light gauze, he crushed a Buddhist bead in his hand.
With his heart still clouded by worldly desire, how could he claim to be pure? From then on, Zhou Jingzhi gave himself over to depravity, and a carefully plotted scheme to steal another man's wife slowly unfolded.
