Since Pangu created heaven and earth, the world has been divided into five realms: the Human Realm, the Divine Realm, the Immortal Realm, the Underworld, and the Buddhist Realm. In the Human Realm, the emperor of Qiuling has united five other small kingdoms. The leading immortal sects are the Qi Clan of Xianju, the Li Clan of Wushan, the Xie Clan of Xianglin, and the Bai Clan of Yinshuang.
Jiu Li, crown prince of Qiuling, is cheerful and energetic. He meets Li Changsheng, who lives in the Ninth Heaven of the Divine Realm and is known for his coldness and keeping others at a distance. Along with his younger sister, Jiu Li enters the Taot Zhu Sacred Realm to study for three years. During that time, the demon clans join forces, and the lord of Liangcheng, Da Ju of the neighboring state, invades Qiuling. Jiu Li also discovers that his father is not his biological father, but his father's friend, Dong Qiancheng. His mother is not his biological mother either; she is his mother's junior sister, Lin Ziyuan. She takes Dong Qiancheng's remains and leaps into the blazing fire.
Later, under the influence of the Chi Ghost Core, Jiu Li cultivates demonic arts. The five realms believe he intends to unite them all, and join forces to suppress him as a heretic. Rejected by the world, he enters the City of the Dead, wipes out the entire demon clan, and massacres Liangcheng, turning it into a dead city. He forges the Four Bronze Bells, builds a sacrificial altar, and creates the "Secret Arts of the Unorthodox," believing that demons can coexist with the five realms and save people, too. He establishes the Demon Realm and becomes its founder. This only brings more resentment, and everyone joins forces to attack him. In the fighting, his younger sister is accidentally injured, triggering the fourth toll of the Four Bronze Bells and driving people mad with demonic energy. In the end, he accidentally causes Bai Yumo's death, plunging the world into chaos. Only then does he finally realize his mistakes. He gives up his body and all his spiritual energy to quell the upheaval, and vanishes from the world.
